In the 1960s, the United States was embroiled in a war against Vietnam. In protest of the American invasion of Vietnam, a group of women from the Women’s Liberation Movement created a visual statement to show their solidarity with the Vietnamese people. They took a photograph of themselves and printed it onto a T-shirt. The shirt was covered with red paint and had an image of a heart bleeding blood. They were not advocating violence against Americans; they were simply drawing attention to the fact that Vietnamese citizens were being killed by their own government.
